What do you do when grounding techniques stop working? Can therapy happen online? How do you support someone who feels unsafe leaving the house?
In Episode 59.5 of 3Spoonies, we welcomed back wellbeing specialist Christine Spencer to answer community questions following our main episode on PTSD.

This follow-up episode was practical, compassionate and full of helpful advice for anyone navigating trauma, anxiety or recovery.
Managing Triggers in Group Settings
One listener asked about running role-playing game sessions and how to help players feel safe if certain topics could be triggering.
Christine suggested something simple but effective: give people the chance to share concerns privately before the session begins.
That might mean sending a message beforehand outlining themes or topics and asking whether anything needs to be considered.
This can help people feel more comfortable than raising sensitive issues in front of a group.
When Grounding Techniques Stop Working
Another question came from someone who felt their usual grounding tools were no longer as effective.
Christine explained that wellbeing tools are personal and often need refreshing over time.
What works in one season of life may not work forever.
She encouraged people to ask:
- What do I enjoy doing?
- What helps me feel calmer?
- What have I stopped doing that used to help?
- What new things could I try?
Helpful ideas included:
- short daily walks
- journaling
- hobbies
- social connection
- learning something new
- gentle movement
- speaking to someone supportive
There is no one-size-fits-all solution.
Journaling as an Unexpected Lifeline
Claire also shared her own experience of journaling.
Something she once thought would never suit her has now become a powerful tool for self-awareness.
Sometimes writing freely can reveal feelings or patterns the mind has struggled to process consciously.
It was a lovely reminder that the things we resist most can sometimes help us most.
Can Therapy Be Done Online?
One listener asked whether therapy can work remotely for someone who does not feel safe leaving the house.
Christine explained that yes — therapy can absolutely be done online.
Virtual sessions can be a lifeline for people dealing with PTSD, anxiety or fear around leaving home.
However, the best format depends on the individual. Some people prefer:
- online sessions from a safe space
- face-to-face support in a neutral environment
- a mixture of both
The key is finding what feels manageable and supportive.
Choosing the Right Support
The episode also highlighted that not every therapist works the same way.
Some only offer in-person sessions. Others work exclusively online. Some offer both.
It is okay to ask questions and find someone whose approach suits your needs.
The right support often starts with the right fit.
Final Thoughts
This was a warm and practical follow-up episode full of reassurance.
Recovery is not about finding one perfect tool and sticking with it forever. It is about learning what helps you now, adapting when needed, and reaching out when things feel heavy.
If you are navigating PTSD or trauma responses, support exists — and it can look more flexible than you might think.
